My Take: Will 2014 be the next 2010?

During the summer of 2014, July to be exact, the NBA may see the second coming of the summer of 2010 when an NBA super power was born overnight.  The superpowers that the NBA had in the past were built primarily through the draft and clever trades but never like this.  The Miami Heat set the standard of waiting and then executing the perfect plan to create enough cap space to sign multiple "max" players in a year and now the seeds have been planted for the next incarnation.

Miami again will be a major factor during the summer of 2014 due to their "Big Three" having opt out clauses in their contracts at that time.  No one expects all 3 potential free agents, Wade, Bosh, and James to leave the franchise but one of the 3 could very well leave and end his career with his hometown team who has coveted him for sometime.  In the event that anyone of the "Big Three" were to leave, the Miami Heat would have an abundance of room to reload.  The decision of the "Big Three" will again dominate the headlines but there's two other franchises who will be able to share in the spotlight due to gaining additional cap space.

After the recent trade of Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Orlando Magic will stand in prime position to add two "max" players should they stay the current course and not add any bad contracts.  The last time the Magic had such a large amount of space, they lured Tracy McGrady and Grant Hill to the Magic kingdom after failing to land Tim Duncan.  For reasons that are unknown, the Orlando Magic seems to get a bad rap when it comes to making major free agent moves, it's as if top tier free agents are allergic to the city but with the new regime in town, that image could change fast.

Perhaps the biggest players of 2014 could possibly be the Los Angeles Lakers.  At that time, the contracts of Steve Nash, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant will be fulfilled and both will be well past their prime.  If both are willing to take the cut in pay, a new Lakers Dynasty could be born with Dwight Howard as their centerpiece as they two would have enough cap space to sign two "max" players as long as they stay on the current course.  Of course it's always too early to predict these things but don't underestimate the fact that this is the time where the seeds are planted.  The successful franchises have figured that out.  Plant the seeds when no one is paying attention and then make your move, plot the course, and win championships.
