This weekend the 1972 US Olympic Mens Basketball Team reunited and Doug Collins, who was a member of the team, was asked if he'd be interested in replacing Coach K who has stated that he will not return to coach Team USA for Rio games in 2016. It was the first time that the members of the 72 team have been together since they lost the Gold Medal game to Soviet Union in controversial fashion.
"It's a tremendous honor that somebody would even throw my name out there....It's four years down the road and I understand in this business you hope you are an active coach at the time....I am hoping that I am still active and I would like to coach four or five years in Philadelphia...Jerry Colangelo is a great leader, and see what he did with Coach K, putting him together, being the guy....Obviously if they would ask me to do it I would be thrilled to do it, but there are a lot of great candidates....I guess it would be sort of fitting, getting to end my Olympic experience where I started in '72," he said. "And it has been amazing that I have been able to broadcast four Olympics."
