New post

Swing by The Tip Off/NBA blog today to read my thoughts on the actions of Gregg Popovich and David Stern from last evening.

Kevin Durant talks Russell Westbrook

Quietly Russell Westbrook is putting together a pretty nice season.  He's averaging 3 more assists than last season and ironically his shots have come down versus last season.  Recently Kevin Durant spoke to the media about the growth that Westbrook has shown.

“He's just slowing down. Taking his time,” said Kevin Durant. “As you start to grow in this league, the game starts to slow down for you a little bit. You start to see things earlier than you would the first or second year. So he's just getting everybody involved … He's sacrificing shots for himself to mix it around for the whole team. That's what great point guards do and he's having a helluva season.”

Suns to offer money back guarantee

The Phoenix Suns will become the first team in NBA history to offer a money back guarantee next Thursday when the Suns face the Dallas Mavericks.  The Suns are suffering from their lowest attendance numbers since the 1991/92 NBA season, the season before the arrival of Charles Barkley which fired up the fan base.  If fans don't have "fun" at the game, they will be eligible to receive their money back.   All the fans will have to do is simply fill out an online form and send it in with your ticket.

Wallace fined

Brooklyn Nets forward Gerald Wallace was fined $35,000 for his part in the Celtics/Nets brawl last evening.

Breaking News......

Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended 2 games by the NBA for his part in the "fight" with Kris Humphries of the Brooklyn Nets.

Spurs stars to miss tonight's game

Reports indicate that Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Danny Green will not participate in tonight's game versus the NBA Champion Miami Heat due to being sent home (rest) by head coach Gregg Popovich.  The foursome were reportedly spotted leaving Miami around lunch time via Southwest Airlines.

Rondo defends his actions, makes case to NBA (Video)

Rondo talks incident

The NBA world is patiently awaiting the ruling from the league office on whether or not Celtics guard Rajon Rondo will be suspended for last evenings "fight" with Nets forward Kris Humphries.  Rondo spoke with NBA officials today, telling his side of the story, however he was given no timetable for a ruling on a potential suspension.  Rondo recently spoke to the media and stated the following:

"I need to be out there for my teammates, but I need to stick up for them, too....I play the game hard. I play the game with an edge.  I'm not a trash talker."

Murphy released

In order to make room for guard Derek Fisher, the Dallas Mavericks have released forward Troy Murphy to create a free roster spot.  Murphy played in 14 games for the Mavericks this season and only shot 31.4% from beyond the arc.

Lopez out

Brooklyn Nets center Brook Lopez has a sprained foot and won't play Friday in Orlando or Saturday in Miami.

Henderson close to return?

Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Henderson has been cleared to participate in running and jumping drills on his sprained left foot.  Henderson injured his foot on November 3rd and has missed the previous 12 games.

“It’s almost there,” Henderson said “I haven’t done a lot of contact yet; that’s what I’m waiting on now. There’s still a level of soreness in there.....I don’t know. Some days I’ll go really hard and the next day it will be really sore. There are setbacks...But those are growing pains. I’m close – the next few games.”

Bogut unsure of return date

Reports have traveld throughout NBA circles that Warriors center Andrew Bogut was prepared to come back as soon as Saturday but that is the case and Bogut himself isn't sure of his return date.

"That's not going to happen, I can say that right now," Bogut said. "I'm not going to play Saturday, and I'm still a ways off. It's an interesting rehab because there's not a timeline for it. Once you get that swelling down, then you're ready to play basketball. But if I engage in strenuous activity for 2-3 days, then my ankle still swells up.....It's still sore, and it's just not right yet," he said. "When I try to train for extended periods, it just doesn't respond well. Until I can get through a week's worth of full practices, I'm back to where I am now."

Barkley reminds us who the best team in New York is

NBA Hall of Fame member Charles Barkley loves to share his version of the truth and recently he again took a shot at the New York Knicks which is nothing new considering he's taken shots at the Knicks ever since the Knicks came to town.

"The Nets are the best team. You take away Carmelo Anthony, the Nets are better at every other position. Also, the (Nets) got a better bench than the Knicks. They've got a better team....Brooklyn has a better bench," he said. "I love Reggie Evans. To me, the 'X' factor is Andray Blatche. ... They put a good team together and I want to give (Nets general manager) Billy King some credit ... they've got a lot of weapons."

Shaq talks Heat Championship

NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal won his last championship as a member of the Miami Heat in 2006.  While speaking to the Miami Sun Sentinel, O'Neal was asked about the difficulty the Heat may face when it comes to defending their NBA Championship.

"It's all about their health," he said of the Heat's perimeter stars, "because this season as compared to last season, this one is a real season....It's going to be 80 games," he said. "Last year, I think the Heat had the advantage, because against guys like LeBron, D-Wade, 50 games, they're going to dominate pretty much every time. But 80 games, anything can happen....D-Wade has already missed a couple of games. So it's all about the health of the guys. I know if everybody stays healthy, they'll be fine...As long as those guys stay healthy, they will still be the favorites," O'Neal said of the Heat. "So it's all about their health and it it's all about their core group and staying together. Pat Riley and the management has done a great job of keeping everybody together."

The Pulse: Your Take

Tonight James Harden will return to OKC for the first time since being traded to the Houston Rockets. Which franchise and its players need the win more? Is it more important for the Thunder to earn the victory to prove that Harden isn't missed or is it more important for the Rockets to earn the W so that Harden can have the last laugh?

Bucks to trade Gooden?

NBA veteran Drew Gooden hasn't played much for the Milwaukee Bucks this season and reports now indicate that the Bucks are quietly trying to move the forward.  Gooden is still owed around a total of $20 million for this season and the next two.

Cousins talks ejection

Thus far in this early NBA season, Kings forward/center DeMarcus Cousins hasn't had the best start to the season.  He was ejected during the Kings last game after receiving two quick technical fouls and Cousins recently spoke about the incident.

"The referee cursed at me," Cousins said. "He told me to go (expletive) ask the other referee (about the first technical foul). I was going to say something back, kept my cool and walked away and still end up with a technical. So I still don't understand."

Gortat rejects extension

Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat recently revealed that he turned down a multi year contract extension from the franchise.

“We just said we’re going to wait,” Gortat said. “I want to finish this contract, and we’ll see where I go from there. It didn’t even bother me or change anything in my attitude or performance. The thing I’m concentrating is coming back to dominating the game and getting back to being a defensive spark.”

Rick Carlisle Interview Excerpts

Courtesy of Galloway & Company

On O.J. Mayo being a leader:
“You never know exactly what you’re going to get when a guy signs. You talk to him and do interviews. From a far, he looked emotionless. I always liked the way he played. He played hard, but he has a little more personality to him than you think. He’s a great worker. A lot of times on the road, and the only other guy that I know that has done this is Drk (Nowitzki), he tries to get in the arena the night before and shoot. He’s a gym rat. He wanted to be in Dallas. He wanted the challenge of stepping in there and replacing Jason Terry, (Jason) Kidd and some of the other guys. He’s taken it very seriously, and it’s something that is very admirable.
On Vince Carter playing at a high level despite his age:
“He’s an amazing guy. He’s a great athlete. He has been his whole career. He’s taken good care of himself obviously. What we’re seeing more of is guys playing into their mid 30’s and late 30’s. Look at (Jason) Kidd. He’s out there, and he’s 39 years old. He had 17 points and five or six steals and was knocking down 3’s and causing all kinds of havoc. You’ve got (Steve) Nash who is 38. A lot of older guys have realized that if they take care of themselves they can kind of cheat father time a little bit. Vince is an important guy on our team. The responsibility I have with him is to make sure that I’m playing him in stretches of minutes that aren’t too long and let him get out there and get going but after five or six minutes, seven at the most he’s got to come out before he goes back in.”

Davis talks Vaughn

There's no question that Glen "Big Baby" Davis is the leader and go to guy of the Orlando Magic.  It's a different role than the one that he had for 4 seasons as a Celtics under the tutelage of head coach Doc Rivers.  Yesterday Davis spoke  to the media about the differences between Rivers and his current coach Jacque Vaughn.

“Doc is more of a military-minded type of guy,” Davis said. “Jacque is more of a Gandhi type of guy: soft but powerful. Doc is more of a ‘get-the-job-done’ [person]. Jacque Vaughn is more of a guy who’ll ask you, ‘What’ll make you feel comfortable to get the job done?....I think that’s different with players, but sometimes I think my system and the way I feel and the way I function, I feel like I function better in Jacque’s system. Doc wasn’t the type of guy to pat you on your back and say, ‘Good job, man.’ He’s more like, ‘All right, move on.  In a way, that’s positive. But some players are different. Jacque is a different guy. He’ll pat you on the back [and say] ‘good job’ to motivate you. But at the same time, he still holds you accountable if you’re doing things wrong.”

Gasol injured?

Many NBA fans have noticed that Pau Gasol hasn't been himself lately after many thought that he'd thrive under new head coach Mike D'Antoni.  Sources now indicate that Gasol has been plagued by tendinitis in both of his knees.  Gasol has wore bands over both knees to aid in reducing swelling and pain.

NBA Q&A: Magic CEO Alex Martins

Courtesy of Mary Schmitt Boyer

Q: How is the Magic's rebuilding going after the trade of Dwight Howard?
A: Things are going well. We prefer to refer to it as a transition, as opposed to a rebuilding. We call it a transition because we feel like we came out of the summer with valuable assets that we were going to be able to transition into a different era, as opposed to start from scratch. We had some veteran pieces, and adding the young players and the rookies, specifically [Andrew] Nicholson and [Moe] Harkless, we felt like we weren't starting from scratch. We had been to this place before with Shaq [Shaquille O'Neal], who left as a free agent in 1996, and we did not get any assets back in return, and we pledged if we crossed that bridge again that we weren't going to handle it the same way.
Q: What has been the biggest surprise so far?
A: I guess if there was one bit of a surprise it was DeQuan Jones. He came in as an undrafted free agent, played really, really well in camp. It came down to a DeQuan Jones-Quentin Richardson decision. Ultimately, we felt like DeQuan had some great ability, some great upside, and with the opportunity to play, we felt like he could be a contributor, and he has been.
Q: You spent some time as a vice president of communications and public affairs with the Browns. Do you still follow them?
A: I follow them from afar. Phil Dawson was always one of my favorite players when I was there, and I can't believe, 13 years later, he's still one of the best kickers in the NFL, but he is. I keep in close contact with Carmen [Policy.] . . . But there's not a whole lot of folks I'm still in contact with from there.
Q: What's the biggest difference working in the NFL versus the NBA?
A: It seems simplistic, but it's the biggest difference that everything is built around, and that's the number of games. Every game is do-or-die, life or death, in the NFL. When you lost on Sunday, it was a morgue on Monday. Things started to pick up a little on Tuesday, and by Wednesday, you needed to move on. In the NBA, you get beat tonight and you've got to play tomorrow. You can't dwell on it.
Q: What's your fondest memory of Cleveland?
A: There were a lot of great ones. I would say my fondest memory was during the early days, during the building days, really living morning to night with all those guys and getting ready and built up. It was dinners out every night -- so many good ones. One of my favorite places was Lola [now Lolita].

Collins talks slow starts

The Philadelphia 76ers were thought by many to be contenders in the Eastern Conference but at 7-5 and currently 6th in the conference  the Sixers hardly look as if they can contend with the best the east has to offer.  Recently Sixer's head coach Doug Collins spoke the media about the problem that's hindering the 76ers.

"We've been digging ourselves huge holes," Collins said.  "We've won three first quarters, and we're 3-0 [in those games]," Collins said. "But we've lost nine first quarters. So there is this misconception that the NBA is a fourth-quarter game. Well, that's maybe when the excitement begins. But the first quarter a lot of times dictates how you are going to play."

Bell to Lakers?

Raja Bell is still under contract with the Utah Jazz but that hasn't stopped the Los Angeles Lakers from thinking of adding Bell to their roster.  Jazz management have allowed Bell and his agent to seek deals elsewhere before they cut the veteran.  If Bell is indeed cut, the Lakers and also the Chicago Bulls would considering signing him as Bell is currently in his hometown of Miami working out for a possible NBA return.

Brandon Roy Update

Multiple doctors have advised Timberwolves guard Brandon Roy to retire due to his knee condition which is getting worse day by day.  Roy, 28, has degenerative arthritis, which erodes and eventually eliminates cartilage.  His knees have reached level III arthritis and there's currently only four levels.  Should Roy's knee reach level IV, he will need a knee replacement.

Woodson talks Stoudemire

When asked yesterday at shootaround if Amar'e Stoudemire would be a starter once he returns from injury, Knicks head coach Mike Woodson gave the following answer.

“I’m going to address that when we get to that point,” he said. “Right now, I’m just taking it a day at a time and work [with] the guys we have in uniform....Our doctors make that decision,’’ Woodson said on whether he travels. “He’s continuing therapy. When the time comes he’ll let us know when he’s ready.’’

With the role that the Knicks have on lately with Carmelo Anthony primarily at the 4, Stoudemire would serve the Knicks better on their second unit alongside of J.R. Smith among others.  Despite being paid $100 by Knicks to be "the guy" before the Carmelo Anthony trade, he may now become the most expensive bench player in the history of the NBA.

NBA Q&A: Zach Randolph

Courtesy of ESPN Radio

Q: Did you whoop his ass?
A: Man, nah, I didn’t whoop his ass. That’s the thing about it…I was surprised. I was surprised.
Q: What happened in the back that the NBA is fining you for, because nobody knows the story?
A: I mean, it really wasn’t, I just, they said because I went through the double doors. I guess I went on their side. So I don’t know.
Q: So you were going to go whoop his ass?
A: (Laughs).
Q: Are you guys lunatics? Like, you both went to the back. You were really going to fight.
A: You know what, I’ll tell you, them basketball games they get real emotional and, man, two guys, it’s physical, emotional. I mean, it gets rough down there and emotions flare.  And one thing can lead to another on that court.
Q: Listen, we can joke about it now but at the time everybody loved it, right? Because you clearly say to the guy I’ll beat your ass. Right? The microphone just happened to pick you up saying that.
A: Man, I know, man. They played it on ESPN 100 times. Like, man stop playing it.
Q: But it appeared to me Perkins wasn’t talking to you. He was talking to Marc (Gasol), right?
A: Well, you know, when you’re talking to Marc you’re talking to me. So that’s how that roll. I’m talking about on the court or off the court. You know, and that’s the same way with him. I think he got made because Marc had just came — remember that move where Marc had crossed him over at the elbow and then had pumped faked? And I said, ‘Oh my gosh. Bust his butt, Marc’ running down the court.
Q: Oh, you said that to Perkins?
A: (Laughs). Yeah.
Q: It was pretty rough, man. He turned him inside out.
A: He did.
Q: So then Perkins gets mad, he starts barking and that’s when you get into it?
A: Yup.
Q: And then in the back, did you try to go in their locker room?
A: Nah, I didn’t go in their locker room. It was some doors; I had went on their side. Their locker room was like right there to the left. But I had went through some doors in the hallway. And I went through the doors. But it was a lesson learned. It won’t happen again. I ain’t gonna lose no $25,000 again. I’m done with all that bluffing on the court, because them guys do a lot of bluffing. I’m from the bluff city. We don’t do no bluffing, man. (Laughs).
Q: Do you think Perkins got the point? Do you think he probably thought ‘This guy’s a maniac?’
A: (Laughs). I don’t know. Perkins know me, so he know what’s up.
Q: Could you whoop his ass?
A: (Laughs). I’m good with these hands, man. I’m a jackin’ dude. I’m pretty good with these hands so…Hey, every day I came out the house I had to fight, you know. Me and my brother.
Q: You guys, you fought growing up?
A: Yeah.
Q: How many fights would you say you’ve been in?
A: (Exhales). Man, I’d say, man it’s too many to count.
Q: Hundreds?
A: Probably about 30, 40.
Q: Thirty or 40?
A: Yeah, I’m talking about from like middle school and, you know, my freshman year. But mainly when I was young.
Q: How many have you lost? If I’m going to give you a record, right? Like a boxer, I’m going to give you a record.
A: You know what, I’m going to say about 30, 28-2 or 28-4. I’m going to tell you this, because I used to fight the older guys. You know, I used to fight older guys. You know, the older guys got to chastise you and make sure you ain’t backing down. So me or my brother, we never backed down so we used to have to fight older guys.

Irving talks injury

Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving doesn't want to be known as a player that's injury prone but the back luck of missing games due to injury seemingly can't escape him.

"I've jammed almost every finger on my hand, so I just knew when it started turning black and blue . . . I just thought it was a bad sprain, but it just turned out to be broken..."It's frustrating...I'm just glad it's not injuries, knock on wood, such as something that could keep me out for six months or nothing like that. I'm going to miss a few games, I'm aware of that, but you just gotta stay positive. Things happen in the game of basketball and obviously I can play, but I'm just being cautious right now."

New Orleans Hornets guard Roger Mason was joined by teammates Lance Thomas, Al-Farouq Aminu, Austin Rivers and Darius Miller while distributing Thanksgiving meals for more than 350 New Orleans families yesterday.

"People have been coming up to me around the city, saying thank you,'' Mason said. "It's hard out here today and for them they're not only getting turkeys but we're giving them a free meal for Thanksgiving. That puts a smile on my face.''
