Hawks' Owner speaks on Celtics, Garnett

C.L. Anthony | 8:36 AM | , , ,

According to the AJC, Celtics co-owner Michael Gearon Jr. shared his thoughts on Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics while speaking at the Third Annual Art of It Luncheon recently.

“Did you see what Al Horford did last night? The timeline for recovery for his injury is another three months. He’s not even supposed to be playing and Josh Smith should not be playing.Zaza Pachulia can’t stand up, but if we can get past this round there is a chance that we can get him back. So this is a team that is overcoming adversity. I wish . . . some of the national media or even some of the local media, more the paper than the TV guys, recognize how hard these guys are playing based on how injured they are.
“On top of all that, we don’t get any calls, which I know everybody always hears. But I’ll give you a stat. Last night, we are playing this old physical team. They are old. I know what happens when you play basketball, old guys foul. Kevin Garnett is the dirtiest guy in the league. We are playing Boston last night and they had two fouls the whole first half. We had five times that and we’re athletic.”

Greg Oden Update

C.L. Anthony | 6:00 AM | , , ,

During an interview with Grantland, NBA free agent Greg Oden revealed that he'd become an alcoholic while recovering from his latest knee injury.  Oden also shared his thoughts on the possible end of his career.

"If you know anything about guys in the Air Force," Greg explained, "it's that they drink a ton. My cousin got wrapped up in the NBA lifestyle and threw parties at my house all the time. So I got wrapped up in it too. When I played well, I'd drink to celebrate. And when I played poorly, I'd drink to forget. That second year in Portland I pretty much became an alcoholic."

When asked about retirement

"I'd just have to accept it," Greg said. "I'm at peace with everything. I want more than anything to be able to play again. But if I can't, I'll still have a decent life. Getting cut (by Portland) kind of put everything into perspective. There's more to life than basketball, and at some point it's going to end anyway. I'm going to do what I can to get back on the court, but if it doesn't work out, I'll find something else to do and have a normal life."

Paul Pierce laboring?

C.L. Anthony | 6:00 AM | , , , ,

According to Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce twisted his left knee in a recent shootaround and isn't 100% and that has the Celtics concerned because they know that they will only go as far as Pierce will carry them.  Sources indicate that Pierce aggravated the injury during Tuesday's game causing even more concern among the Celtics.

"It's the same," he said. "Nothing really changed. I talk to my kids about everything. I talk to my family about everything. That's not new."

Stern admits lockout is to blame for injuries

C.L. Anthony | 8:00 AM | , , ,

NBA commissioner David Stern recently confirmed what every true NBA fan already knew:  The NBA Lockout of 2012 is to blame for the majority of the injuries that we've seen during the condensed season.  While appearing on the CBS Sports Network, Stern stated the following.

"There is some part of it that may be related to that," Stern said Tuesday during an appearance on the CBS Sports Network. "I think some part of it is luck and some part of it is lack of preparedness by our players before the season began. It's a combination of things.....The one thing I do know is that we've had more lost games because of injuries, because the compressed schedule takes away a day of rest for a minor injury. ... We're going to look at the precise numbers at the end of the season and we'll try to have a view of it because it's spread out differently as well. Some teams don't practice. Some teams do. I don't know whether it relates," the commissioner added.....Some teams actually worked out with the players alone all summer and some didn't. We're going to try to see whether we can learn something from this compressed season in the way that teams approach it."

Can the Magic keep Anderson?

C.L. Anthony | 6:00 AM | , ,

Orlando Magic forward Ryan Anderson will be a restricted free agent in the off season and Magic officials have already stated that they will do whatever they can to retain Anderson's services but Anderson has stated that he'd like to keep his options open.

"I love it here in Orlando," he said. "This is a place where I've had an incredible opportunity. I love living here. I think that this is a place that fits my style of play. You know, it's hard. It's hard because at the end of the day, it is a business. You know, I want to get the most out of my career that I can.....Obviously, I love it here. I think I've made that very clear to everybody here that I'm very happy here. But I want to come into this with an open mind."

Odom voted out of share

C.L. Anthony | 8:02 AM | , ,

Former Mavericks forward Lamar was voted out of his playoff share by his former teammates which equaled about $20,000.

"If the Lamar thing would have worked out and if he would have played like the year before when he was the best sixth man, I think we would have had a shot,'' forward Dirk Nowitzki, reffering to the Mavs' chances of advancing in the playoffs. "It would have given us another playmaker, another guy that’s long, that can defend and rebound.
"But for whatever reason the stuff he was going through off the court was just too much. He couldn’t help us the way he wanted, the way we wanted, and we had to move on without him.''

Knicks coach already planning for next season

C.L. Anthony | 7:00 AM | , , , ,

“Expectations aren’t going to change in New York, you know that,’’ Woodson said. “They shouldn’t. Rightfully so. Anthony’s going to have to raise his game. He’s got to do things this summer to better his game — as well as Tyson and Amar’e. If I’m the head coach here, I have to make sure it happens. It’s the only way to get out of the rut in terms of him being a first-round exit. He’s got to change that.....I like to see and he’s made major strides this year,’’ Woodson said. “We started this journey, he made guys around him better and he was better for it. That has to be a continuation. I got to push him to be in better shape when you start the season. A lot of things that got to be changed. Not a lot of things, but … There’s got to be some changes to get to the next level.’’

It’s definitely not 100 percent. It’s a little bit sore, too. Today was a test run.....It’s definitely not 100 percent.....I’m still pretty sore at times. I’m a team player. We have an opportunity where we have to try to get a win.’’

My Take: Stoudemire's time over in NY?

C.L. Anthony | 7:38 AM | , , ,

Rumors have been swirling since the glass punch heard around the world late Monday evening after the Knicks suffered another demoralizing loss to the Miami Heat in their 1st round playoff matchup.  The only fact that is known regarding the situation is that Stoudemire will miss game 3 of the series Thursday evening.  Could Stoudemire be lost for the remainder of the playoffs, perhaps, but the bigger picture could be far worse for the former Rookie of the Year.

Stoudemire has 3 years and around $60 million left on his contract and he's become a liability as far as his health and now one must add mental stability.  The Knicks will try to move Stoudemire in the off-season as he and Anthony cannot co-exist on the court, their games don't mesh as they are missing the fluid nature of the games of Wade and James.  He has peaked as an NBA player and I fear that his game will enter a state of decline very soon and the Knicks should feel the same way.  As crazy as it sounds, the Knicks can build around Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler and losing Stoudemire could be the first step in aiding them in the rebuilding process.

Pippen's open letter to the Bulls

C.L. Anthony | 7:20 AM | , ,

An open letter to the 2011-12 Chicago Bulls:
With what happened to Derrick in Game 1, it would be easy to hang your heads right now. You could lose sight of the ultimate goal and give up before the rest of the games have even been played. But I know that’s not even a consideration for this group. And that’s exactly why you’ll make me, Derrick, the organization, and the city of Chicago so proud.
To a man, it’s time for each of you to take a look in the mirror. Decide who you really are and what you represent as a basketball player. Reflect on what you have brought to the table for your team all season long and why you’re a valuable member of the Bulls. Because all of you have contributed to this team’s incredible success. Ask yourself what you can do for the team moving forward. Whether it’s through your verbal leadership or diving on the floor after a loose ball, it’s going to be all about grinding it out moving forward. If there is one piece of advice I can offer you, it’s to put every last ounce of effort you have out there to make everyone proud—Derrick, the fans, and first and foremost, yourself.
Your team has come a long way in terms of what it has been able to achieve this season. And that was done collectively, as a group. It has never been about any one individual. Yes, Derrick was the reigning NBA MVP, but he epitomizes the team concept and you all followed his lead. So it’s been the effort of the group, as well as a tremendous job by the coaching staff, which has gotten us to this point. And it’s exactly why I feel good about this team right now. You’re a group that remains together. You’ve repeatedly lifted each other up when a teammate has fallen. Now, it comes down to continuing to give your best effort every time you step on to the basketball court. It’s easy to say you’re doing that, but are you really dedicating yourself to another two months of basketball? As a player, that’s what I always wanted out of my teammates. Just make sure you arrive on gameday focused and full of energy. If guys want to just show up and take on the 76ers or whoever, well, that might not be enough to get the job done. It takes locking in on the task at hand and honing in on what you need to do in order to be successful in the NBA postseason.
While I dealt with my share of injuries throughout my career, I was fortunate to have been healthy for the majority of our run in the 1990’s. The same can be said about Michael Jordan. But, when Michael retired for the first time to play baseball in 1993, we were faced with a similar challenge to what you’re up against—playing without your best player and leader. Granted, Michael chose to step away from the game and Derrick is sidelined because of his injury, but it comes down to the players who are still out there coming together to collectively rise up as a group and win games. We exceeded a lot of expectations in the regular season, finishing 55-27. But as we entered the postseason, a lot of people had written us off and said we didn’t have a chance without Michael. There was a lot of talk about how we wouldn’t make it out of the first round and might even get swept. But we didn’t listen to any of that. We believed in ourselves and we went out to play the type of basketball that we knew we were capable of playing. We swept Cleveland in the first round and it was a great feeling. Even though we ultimately fell short and lost to New York in a second round Game 7, we all believed we could have—and should have—done better. My point is that there was never a moment where we felt sorry for ourselves or let anyone push us into any self-doubt. We stayed positive and believed that if we stuck together and played good, hard defense, we could beat any team out there. That’s what I believe you can do as well.
You lost a very important piece to the puzzle, there is no denying that. But having dealt with Derrick’s injuries during the regular season, as well as those as some of the others, gave members of the bench an opportunity to step forward as you did all season long. And every single individual on this roster has shown that they can make positive contributions to winning. Obviously the other starters in Richard, Luol, Carlos and Joakim—all All-Star caliber players in their own right—need to raise their level of game across the board to compensate for missing Derrick. But it’s the bench too that will be as important as ever in answering the call. And as we’ve seen these last two seasons, the Bench Mob is up for that challenge. You all believe in yourselves and the coaching staff believes in you too. You’ve already demonstrated you can have success without Derrick in the lineup. Now it’s time to do it when it matters the most.
As you all know, this is when it pays extra dividends to have a coach like Thibs. To me, his preparation is what separates him as one of the league’s very best coaches. It’s got to be his greatest strength. Having watched him coach night in and night out these last two seasons, this team comes ready to play, whether it’s a back-to-back or three games in four nights. He’s always ready and the job that you as players do reflects that. It’s an underrated asset to have a group that truly knows its personnel and the intricate schemes of a gameplan. Thibodeau has you ready to go every night and battle and that’s because of his attention to detail. He’s also kept you focused and prevented you from looking ahead. That’s the mentality you need as the playoffs continue—one game at a time. Execute. Play good, hard defense. Protect the ball. Even without a great player like Derrick, you are still capable of doing those things.
For the fans who don’t know, Derrick was at practice on Monday and I got a chance to catch up with him as well. Just being able to see him with our own eyes, it lifted everyone’s spirits. I could see that in each and every one of you. I could see that it was reassuring to you to know that your teammate is going to be OK, first and foremost. You become so close to a teammate like that and when you’re hearing all sorts of things through the media, it’s discomforting. But I’m glad Derrick made it to Berto and showed everyone he is hanging in there. As we look ahead to Game 2 and beyond, though, now you can realize exactly what you have to play for. With or without Derrick, the ship has to continue to sail. And as he told many of you, it’s time to re-dedicate yourselves to staying on track. I know none of you are ready to stop working and you want more than anything to win for Derrick. That’s the best tribute you could make for him. And in a way, it would very much make him a part of it. He’ll be with you the rest of the way whether he’s in the gym or not, watching and supporting. While you hate to see what happened happen, adversity often brings a team together even more than they were before. It’s all about how you react to that adversity.
As for Derrick, I truly believe he will come out of this better and stronger. If anything, it will be an eye opening experience for him. Remember, he’s still a very young player in this league. Now he knows that injuries are a part of the game. As a young player, I always thought I was doing everything I could. But the longer you play, the more you learn, and the better you’re prepared for what this game throws at you.
Just go out there and play hard. Play your best. Leave everything you’ve got on the floor. Yes, you lost one of your brothers—a warrior in every sense of the word—but I know and you know you’ve still got a lot of fight left. You’re still the best team in the NBA until an opponent proves otherwise. So go out there and play like it. You’ve earned that much with Derrick along the way, but you also won a lot of games without him. It’s time to meet the challenge.
Wishing you all the best of luck on a long postseason run.

Ewing to Bobcats?

C.L. Anthony | 7:17 AM | , , ,

Since 2007 NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing has been as assistant coach with the Orlando Magic but his chance to become a head coach may have arrived.  Those in the know understand that Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing have been great friends for years and with the Bobcats needing a head coach while the franchise is in contention to earn the first draft pick, Ewing could be the smart choice for the rebuilding team.  If the Bobcats are able to secure the first pick in the draft and select Anthony Davis, Ewing, a former number overall pick himself, would be best suited to guide Davis.

Will Beasley return to the Timberwolves?

C.L. Anthony | 7:54 AM | , , ,

Will Michael Beasley become an unrestricted free agent at the age of 23?  As of right now the Timberwolves are in control of Beasley's future due to the team being able to extend a qualifying offer to the young forward of a little more than $8 million to retain his rights.  Beasley plans to travel to LA to workout in the off season with former NBA player Norm Nixon as he awaits word on his future.

"I'm not really putting too much thought into it, not really putting too much energy into it, because it's one of those things that I can't control," Beasley said recently. "I'm going to approach my summer as if I'm coming back next season, and I'm going to try to come back in the best shape I can, come back the best player I can be."

"Shoot a zillion jump shots a day. Dribble a million minutes a day. Just work on being an all-around player, from rebounding to defending to blocking shots to stealing basketballs to scoring to playmaking," Beasley said, "Just working on being an all-around great player. Not just a scorer, not just a defender, not just a rebounder. Just being an all-around great player."

With all of the focus being on the stunning comeback that the Clippers mounted last night against the Grizzlies, the fact was lost that Caron Bulter broke his left hand and will be out for the remainder of the playoffs.  Butler will be missed as he was one of the most playoff tested players on the team.

Knicks hold private workout

C.L. Anthony | 7:12 AM | , , , , ,

According to sources, Knicks' team captains Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire held a late night private workout session with other members of the team.  The Knicks are surely searching for an identity as they had most of it ripped out of them in Miami Saturday afternoon during game 1.  The loss of Shumpert was a devastating blow and according to coach Mike Woodson, Tyson Chandler is barely hanging on due to the flu.  Anthony did address the media and offered this take on his performance Saturday and what will need to be done going forward.

“I try not to play with pressure,’’ Melo said. “ I go out and play ball. As far as thinking about anything and playing with pressure, I don’t put that pressure on myself. Everybody has off shooting days. It just so happened mine came [Saturday.] Now it’s time for me to go out and play basketball and try to put the pressure back on Miami.’’
